Does my child have to go through pre-k and kindergarten screening?
Yes. it is mandated by the state that all children entering school must go through some kind of screening.
What do I need to bring?
Your child
Your child's shot record
Your child's birth certificate
Your child's social security card
Your insurance card
Proof of residence (electric bill, phone bill, etc.)
Pre-K students also need to bring proof of income.
Be prepared to fill out forms which require names and phone numbers of people who are allowed to pick your child up from school.
What immunizations does my child need to have?
State law requires the following immunizations for children entering schools:
DTP - 4 or more doses, one of which was given on or after the
fourth birthday
Polio - 4 doses. If the 3rd dose was given on or after the
birthday, the 4th dose is not required. However, if a
combination of the two available polio vaccines is used, all
4 doses are needed regardless of age.
MMR -2 doses, given on or after the first birthday
Hepatitis B - 3 doses
Why do I need to provide proof of residence?
Due to the school board's policy on zoning, each child must register at the school that child is zoned for. Proof of residence will help the transportation department determine which school is in your zone. If you do not reside in Bobby Ray's zone but would like for your child to attend there, you may fill out a "request for transfer" form at the transportation table. The decision to allow transfer students to attend Bobby Ray will be based on the number of students who have registered in our zone.
What will my child do at screening?
Your child will have the opportunity to meet the teachers at Bobby Ray as they participate in informal activities such as counting, writing his/her name, naming colors, etc. Also, your child will have their hearing, speech, and vision tested to detect any possible problems.
What will happen with the results of the screening?
The results of the screening will be used to determine your child's strengths and weaknesses and their readiness for kindergarten. You and your child's kindergarten teacher will receive a copy of the results. School psychologists will be on hand to determine your child's success in kindergarten and make recommendations. Also, the speech, vision, and hearing screening will possibly indicate if there are any potential problems that need attention by professionals.
What is "Phase In"?
We have designed "phase in" to make the transition into kindergarten easier for your child. During the first few days of school, we only have a few children attend every day so that we may give each child the attention he/she needs to get used to a new environment. Therefore, your child will not attend school every single day during this time period. During the summer, you will receive a "phase-in" schedule for your child indicating which days your child will attend.
