Library
Story time, puppets,
reading, the teaching of library skills, research, and the selection of
books for check out comprise our comprehensive media program here at Bobby
Ray Memorial Elementary. In addition, students from selected grades use
computers to conduct catalog searches, to research using the Internet, and
to participate in interactive computer books and educational activities via
CD-ROMs.
Children in grades 2 - 5 have regularly scheduled
library periods two times each week while children in kindergarten and first
visit once each week. All students are provided an additional drop in time
from 8 - 8:30 daily to use for check out and return as needed.
In conjunction with the Schoolwide Improvement Program,
the library co-sponsors a Family Reading Night quarterly to encourage and
allow for greater involvement in reading. Accordingly, all students are
strongly encouraged to take part in the Accelerated Reader program which
uses computer testing of comprehension based on each child's individual
reading level. The reading level is determined by a S.T.A.R. reading test
administered by Carol Killian and Shirley Luna, our SIP coordinators.
The space and the large book collection of our library make a
very inviting and comfortable center for our K - 5 students to visit and
learn. As one child expressed it,
"All these books just for kids?" We welcome you to your library and
think you will find lots to enjoy.
